Every house has a story.
Every window opens onto the room
Of someone who is loved –
Or someone who wishes they were.
Every garden tells the tale
Of the mother tending every petal,
Or of the gardener she hired for appearances.
Every wall has heard the tremors
Of the family's clamorous dinner,
Or of the single woman eating alone.
Every driveway has felt the feet
Of the playing children,
Or of the man coming home from work.
Every front door has seen the footprints
Of dozens of fresh, young guests,
Or of the old couple to whom it is familiar.
Every house has a story,
Because every house is someone's home.

Every day as the sun goes down, I pull on a jacket and go for a walk – from the streets to the fields nearby and back again. As I was walking home tonight, I looked around me at all the houses and wondered about them. And then I realized that every house around me had someone living in it who had their own life, their own problems, their own personality, their own friends, their own family… and so on. Their own story to tell. The idea fascinated me, so I rushed home and wrote this. I kind of like how it turned out.
